About this artwork
I'm interested in the natural world, especially as a transition between land and water, sky and earth, reality and possibility. When I paint, I always begin with the sky. It allows for the greatest possible freedom: layer upon layer of paint is applied. This is how cirrus clouds, cumulus clouds, and diffused light emerge. Finally, the horizon plays a crucial role: this is where sky and earth meet. This is where the depth of space is created.
I am… moved by what Gauguin once advised his French painter friend Emile Schuffenecker: “A little advice, don’t try to imitate nature. Art is an abstraction: start from nature while you dream within it, and think more about the act of creation.”
Anne Hefer works as a painter and draftswoman, using bold colors and impulsive work on canvas in her artistic practice, drawing strong inspiration from nature and memories. Her technique is characterized by the experimental use of palette knives and broad brushes; forms emerge intuitively, usually as abstract landscapes or faces, formed through spontaneous interventions and random processes. Her works reflect a deep emotional tension—between longing, transience, and the dreamlike, transforming reality into vision and fiction.
