About this artwork
“Always try to keep a piece of sky open in your life,” said Marcel Proust. Indeed, the lightly clouded sky and the vastness of the sea are emblematic of the beauty of the Mediterranean; for centuries it has been the quintessential travel destination. And yet, in recent decades, the Mediterranean has repeatedly emerged as a danger zone. What might have happened to the many people who set out in unsafe boats in search of a better future?
In my studio… I have a large collection of newspaper photos showing refugees in overcrowded boats. They inspired this oil painting with its highly ambivalent message.
Anne Hefer works as a painter and draftswoman, using bold colors and impulsive work on canvas in her artistic practice, drawing strong inspiration from nature and memories. Her technique is characterized by the experimental use of palette knives and broad brushes; forms emerge intuitively, usually as abstract landscapes or faces, formed through spontaneous interventions and random processes. Her works reflect a deep emotional tension—between longing, transience, and the dreamlike, transforming reality into vision and fiction.
