About this artwork
The series "berlin.berlin..." marks two states of a historical and urban space: Berlin as a mirror of itself, Berlin as a place, and Berlin as a state of being. Between them lies a decade in which Berlin underwent fundamental political, spatial, and social transformation. "berlin.berlin. 1989" evokes political, technical, and architectural systems—connections, boundaries, and switching points. Ten years later, "berlin.berlin. 1999" presents a fragmented… pictorial architecture. Both paintings possess a strong museum logic: materiality, historical references, temporal structure, and iconic reduction. "berlin.berlin. 1999" can be interpreted as a material reflection of a city in which history does not disappear but is inscribed in layers, fragments, and structures. Characteristic of this work is the connection between painting and object. Torn book covers, metal, and layers of paint enter into a dialogical relationship. The materials are carriers of traces of time.
Avni Alija uses a wide variety of media, including oil, acrylic, sand, metal, and even wood and pebbles. He originally studied natural sciences and completed the "Paris School" at the Hamburg Academy. He combines impressionistic plays of light and shadow with impulsive abstract color dynamics and conceptual art, uniting diverse techniques into a curious, exploratory style. His works are a poetic search for meaning, an invitation to learn to see, and an expression of inner contradictions and existential depth.
