About this artwork
In "Shame on me", the canvas becomes a mirror for one of our most isolating human experiences: the prison of self-inflicted shame. This piece maps the quiet tragedy of hiding behind a flawless, smiling facade until the act itself begins to deplete the soul. Even as the figure fights to shed the mask and reclaim honest emotion, the gravity of past wounds pulls it back into place. The work captures that exact, heartbreaking moment when the oppressor… is no longer external, but lives entirely within our own minds. It invites the viewer to look closely at what we hide, what we endure, and the immense strength required to simply acknowledge the cage.
Babette Hinterleitner is a self-taught painter, printmaker, digital and visual artist, drawing inspiration from her lifelong passion and self-directed studies. Her technique fuses the energetic storytelling of comics and manga with Alphonse Mucha’s fluid compositions and the minimalistic expressiveness of Chinese and Japanese ink styles. In her works, she explores unspoken emotions such as sadness, longing, and hope, creating visual narratives that invite viewers to feel seen, understood, and uplifted.
