About this artwork
I wanted to create a romantic study of a cellist caught in the intimate hush before the music fully blooms. Warm gold light meets deep violet shadow, wrapping the figure and instrument in a soft, theatrical glow that feels like velvet in sound form. Layered hints of sheet music and texture sit within the composition like memory, suggesting melodies carried over time rather than simply performed once.
This painting is about closeness and quiet intensity.… The curve of the cello, the still focus of the player, and the sense of a held breath all speak to the tenderness of live music, where emotion arrives first and words come later. Velvet Prelude invites you to linger in that first moment of the phrase, when everything is poised, and the heart is already listening.

Barry Sears is primarily a painter working with oils and mixed media. He returned to his artistic journey in 2022 whilst winding down his former career in Finance. He received his formal training at the Milan Art Institute. His process is deeply experimental, building vibrant imagery from chaotic beginnings and favouring striking, non-traditional colour palettes over realism. His layered techniques create depth and intrigue, while his work conveys a sense of inspired transformation, finding beauty and order within expressive bursts of colour and the ever-shifting play of light and shade.
