About this artwork
Stag Party explores the tension between primal instinct and romantic idealism. Inspired by the lyrics of the 80s power ballad Glory of Love, I wanted to contrast its polished vision of devotion with the raw realities of the natural world.
The painting depicts two stags locked in combat, symbolising nature’s elemental struggle for dominance and mating rights. To heighten this contradiction, I placed them against soft pinks and atmospheric pastels,… embedding fragments of the song’s lyrics into the background like fading echoes of romance.
The title adds a layer of irony. While a “stag party” is associated with pre-wedding celebration and masculine ritual, here it takes on a literal, primal meaning. Pairing this title with imagery of animal conflict and lyrics about honour and love allows the work to question ideas of masculinity, romance, and devotion.
Ultimately, the painting suggests that beneath even our softest notions of love lies something instinctive, fierce, and untamed.

Barry Sears is primarily a painter working with oils and mixed media. He returned to his artistic journey in 2022 whilst winding down his former career in Finance. He received his formal training at the Milan Art Institute. His process is deeply experimental, building vibrant imagery from chaotic beginnings and favouring striking, non-traditional colour palettes over realism.
