About this artwork
I created this oil painting from a photograph taken by a friend and local photographer. Red kites are a familiar and much-loved presence in my neighbourhood, and it is not unusual to look up and see these distinctive birds gliding effortlessly overhead, their forked tails and russet plumage instantly recognisable.
In this work, I wanted to capture both the character of the bird and the mood of the moment. The detailed rendering of the red kite contrasts… with the soft, muted background, emphasising its elegance and command of the air. The atmospheric backdrop creates a sense of space and height, allowing the warmth of the bird's colouring to become the focal point of the composition.
Red Kite is a celebration of a species that has become an integral part of the local landscape, combining careful observation with an atmospheric approach to light, colour and flight.

Barry Sears is primarily a painter working with oils and mixed media. He returned to his artistic journey in 2022 whilst winding down his former career in Finance. He received his formal training at the Milan Art Institute. His process is deeply experimental, building vibrant imagery from chaotic beginnings and favouring striking, non-traditional colour palettes over realism. His layered techniques create depth and intrigue, while his work conveys a sense of inspired transformation, finding beauty and order within expressive bursts of colour and the ever-shifting play of light and shade.
