About this artwork
‘Checked By’ draws on Bauhaus-inspired geometry and precision, using clean lines, bold diagonals, and modular blocks of colour to create a sense of rhythm and balance. The stamped text introduces both a bureaucratic echo and a human trace, hinting at the overlooked systems of validation and control that filter through daily life.
In contrast, small gestures – arrows, dots, hand-drawn marks – undermine the rigidity of the grid, inserting playfulness… and imperfection. The piece sits at the intersection of order and disruption, suggesting how even within tightly structured frameworks, individuality and human presence insist on breaking through.

Credentials
- Works on commission
Ben Serbutt, trained in graphic and editorial design, crafts evocative hand-cut paper collages drawing from printed ephemera, botanical illustrations, geometry, and typographic fragments. His technique is resolutely analogue, layering elements intimately tethered to the rhythms of daily, domestic life, and allowing torn edges and happy accidents to guide composition. His works hum with tension and negotiation between organic and technological worlds, celebrating resistance to perfection and the value of creative friction. Serbutt’s art tenderly conveys the bittersweet complexity of modern existence, urging viewers to honor slowness, imperfection, and the irreducible messiness of being human.
