About this artwork
This work brings a quiet, tropical stillness into dialogue with systems of structure and interruption. A vintage palm illustration anchors the composition, its organic rhythm set against a divided ground of earthy brown and deep green, suggesting both natural habitat and constructed space.
Serbutt overlays this calm with precise linear elements, graphic fragments, and directional marks, introducing a language of control, navigation, and human intervention.… The crossing lines feel both connective and disruptive, cutting across the plant’s gentle form while also mapping unseen flows – of movement, information or time.
Subtle details, like the small “Hello,” hint at human presence: fleeting, almost incidental, yet embedded within the composition. Torn textures soften the geometry, allowing moments of imperfection to breathe within the grid.

Credentials
- Works on commission
Ben Serbutt, trained in graphic and editorial design, crafts evocative hand-cut paper collages drawing from printed ephemera, botanical illustrations, geometry, and typographic fragments. His technique is resolutely analogue, layering elements intimately tethered to the rhythms of daily, domestic life, and allowing torn edges and happy accidents to guide composition. His works hum with tension and negotiation between organic and technological worlds, celebrating resistance to perfection and the value of creative friction. Serbutt’s art tenderly conveys the bittersweet complexity of modern existence, urging viewers to honor slowness, imperfection, and the irreducible messiness of being human.
