About this artwork
In this work, Serbutt turns to the banana plant as a symbol of abundance, fragility, and everyday ritual. A vintage botanical illustration is interrupted and reframed by sharp bands of colour and measured graphic elements, creating a dialogue between organic growth and human systems of organisation.
The composition balances warmth and structure: ochres and greens echo the natural subject, while flashes of orange, pink and white introduce a contemporary,… almost coded language. Lines, arrows, and fragments suggest processes of distribution, consumption and classification – quietly pointing to the global journey of something so familiar.
Here, nature is both celebrated and dissected. The banana becomes more than fruit; it is a marker of connection, labour and exchange. Through layered textures and controlled geometry, Serbutt invites us to reconsider the overlooked – finding rhythm, tension, and meaning in the everyday cycles that sustain us.
