About this artwork
Opposites
Diptych — two works, each 60 × 60 cm
Explores the quiet tension between light and shadow, presence and absence, calm and uncertainty — the same forces that shape both nature and human life.
Created from a simple daisy picked from the lawn, the two works mirror one another like emotional reflections: one luminous, one darker, yet both inseparable. Together they echo the idea that joy and sadness, clarity and confusion, growth and loss… are not enemies, but part of the same cycle.
The series was inspired by the feeling that nature already understands something humans spend their whole lives trying to accept: that opposites can coexist beautifully. Much like a visual yin and yang, each piece only fully exists because of the other.
Botanica Lumen is the collaborative studio of Anna Surdacka and Luis Fernandez, bringing together botanical artistry, optical imaging, and material precision. Anna’s instinct for living form and natural composition meets Luis’s background in optics, physics, and ultra-high-resolution imaging, shaped through years developing industrial scanning systems.
Together, they created an original scannographic practice that captures real botanical specimens with extraordinary clarity, tonal depth, and presence. Working against deep black fields, their pieces move beyond vintage botanical illustration, traditional photography, or decorative printmaking, revealing nature as something immersive, architectural, and unexpectedly powerful.
Designed to be admired from afar and discovered up close, each Botanica Lumen work is created as a museum-grade photographic object, built to live with presence for generations.
