About this artwork
Here I wanted to express the timeless feel of this moor and share my love of this special tree. A hawthorn can live for seven hundred years; it can regenerate growing anew from its existing roots. The lichen hanging from its branches and the twisted trunk suggest a great age. Once known as a sacred tree that will bring ill luck if injured it was also thought to be a gathering place for fairies. People would hang clothing rags upon it and believed…
prayers or cures would be answered by the time the rags had rotted away.
