One dark night in thick fog the steamship ‘Belem’ foundered on the beach north of Northcott. She was carrying iron ore and on her way to Cardiff. It was 20th November 1917 and the crew were sailing very close to shore to avoid German U-boats. Amid steam, fire and devastation the alarm was raised and thankfully thirty-three crew members were rescued by breeches buoy.
I imagined the flames licking the ribs as I painted her remains. Now there is new… life nestling among the rust.
