About this artwork
S.S. Belem was a coaster carrying iron to support the war effort in 1917. As I painted I remembered this verse from John Masefield's poem, "Cargoes,"
Dirty British coaster with a salt-caked smoke stack,
Butting through the Channel on a mad March day,
With a cargo of Tyne coal,
Road-rails, pig-lead,
Fire-wood, iron-ware,
And cheap tin trays.
Now this gallant coaster is claimed by nature. SS Belem is home to the Celtic Sea slug and the honeycomb… worm (Sabellaria alveolata) which builds its tunnels by cementing grains of sand to make hummocky reefs.
