About this artwork
In this painting, I capture the raw beauty and history of this rugged coastline. Using oil, I emphasized the play of light and texture on the crumbling stone and wild landscape, evoking a timeless connection to nature and heritage. This work brings a calm yet powerful energy, inviting you to feel the whisper of the sea and imagine how it looked one hundred and fifty years ago.
Nature has reclaimed and softened a once clamorous, dangerous, industrial… landscape. I found such a contrast between the beauty of this romantic scene populated by jackdaws and glowing with colour and how it would have looked one hundred and fifty years ago. At that time the air would have been filled with noise and smoke while miners worked in tunnels below the surface of the sea. Once described as hell on earth, whole families worked here mining for tin, copper and arsenic.
Chris Edwards, a dedicated painter with formal training from Redruth Art School and Eton Hall, brings her deep connection to the Cornish landscape into her oil paintings. She masterfully blends realism with expressive atmosphere, often incorporating cold wax and celebrating accidental effects for mesmerizing detail and texture. Through her luminous depictions of nature, she conveys a sense of wonder, peace, and the subtle tension of underlying forces, inviting viewers to experience both the beauty and the emotional complexity of the natural world.
