My mom taught me how to make poppy dolls. Every year during my childhood I brought these enchanting fairy children to life.
This year I tried again after a long break and was just as delighted as I was fifty years ago. When I spotted a double page about poppies in a magazine, I saw this collage in my mind's eye. I had impatiently skimmed the article and then pulled out the scissors and started cutting out the poppies. My usual A4 format was too… small for the two poppy girls, so I went above and beyond, grabbed a piece of cardboard, painted a nice background and glued my figures onto the still wet acrylic paint.
The picture put me in a spirit of optimism.
The two girls are on their way to a fantastic world, they almost seem to be floating. They leave everything heavy behind them and travel with confidence, but without baggage, into a new future.
Christine Hagelkrüys is a painter with a sensual and feminine background. She plays with acrylic paints, cuts up her works and reassembles them in new contexts, often supplemented with material from magazines. Her expression lies more in the colors and design, not in the figurative representation. She focuses on women in their beauty and vulnerability and celebrates the heart in all its diversity. Her paintings are a passionate homage to nature and a powerful means of expressing her love for humanity.
