About this artwork
The painting 'Left Behind' shows a young girl with her arms tightly wrapped around her knees and her head tilted sideways on them. The girl's face and hands take up almost the entire picture space. She gazes at the viewer calmly but introspectively. Her facial expressions appear frozen. Her colorful clothing deliberately contrasts with the neutral background, which appears bright and diffuse, creating an ethereal atmosphere. The girl appears tangible… and yet lost, as the title underlines. The painting conveys tenderness and vulnerability without portraying them in a dramatic way. Rather, it shows the endurance of the feeling of being abandoned, isolated, alone—left behind. A feeling the girl knows no other way. I address a mental state that many traumatized people experience without being able to explain or name it: dissociation. The separation of the body from feelings that are unbearable.
Claudia Kaak is a painter with a background in art education, specializing in figurative-realistic oil painting. She uses her own photographs and film stills as the basis for hyperrealistic techniques, often characterized by intense attention to detail. In her works, she explores emotional, psychological, and autobiographical themes; she aims to break taboos, stimulate reflection, and deeply move viewers by making vulnerability, healing, and the invisibility of emotional burdens visible. She is a member of the Portrait Society of America, Poets and Artists, and the International Guild of Realism. Her works are represented in national and international collections.
