About this artwork
This work emerged from several layers of ideas that were layered over one another in the process. It has a serious expression and is thought-provoking—exactly the way I like it. Even though it's not my goal to consciously address political or socially critical themes in my art, this image does play with them a bit. The contrasts, the complexity, and especially the figure's gaze leave room for interpretation—and that's precisely where its power lies…
for me.
The plywood panels I paint aren't always flat. Hanging them with visible screw holes at the corners (usually at the top, sometimes at the bottom) is a deliberate detail that gives my works a decorative, stable, and at the same time pragmatic effect.
