About this artwork
Perched on a dark ledge against a cheerful aqua field, the figure hovers between exposure and escape—both wounded and defiantly present. The work reads as an anti-monument to embodiment: a satirical, tender portrait of a person negotiating gender, desire, and harm in a world where even the sky feels complicit. The figure’s mismatched features suggest a self that’s been spliced by surveillance, judgment, and memory—hyper-aware yet unable to “fit”…
its own skin. Through naive expression, the painting disarms shame while admitting how awkward and provisional identity can feel.

David Kurtz, an Oklahoma-born, San Francisco-based painter, began his journey in the arts honing skills under local artists and at Weitzenhoffer College of Fine Arts.
