About this artwork
This piece is a visual hypothesis about how thought is never entirely one’s own, and how identity often arrives from the outside, perched and whispering. Two human figures stand in a flat space — each wearing a black swan not as decoration but as a living, sentient head-extension. The bird is not companion but parasite: it leans inward, beak poised toward the face, as if whispering impulses, dictating posture, scripting the inner monologue. The human… is not steering the animal; the animal is steering the human. Perhaps our thoughts are not entirely our thoughts at all considering they are influenced by social media and technology among other things.
David Kurtz, an Oklahoma-born, San Francisco-based painter, began his journey in the arts honing skills under local artists and at Weitzenhoffer College of Fine Arts. His Neo-Expressionist style, inspired by the likes of Basquiat and Rauschenberg, employs vigorous and improvisational lines with a distinctive matte effect, creating layers of depth and texture. Through his creations, themes such as civil rights, and religious influence laced with dark humor are navigated, aiming to stir a mix of discomfort and amusement in viewers.
