About this artwork
Broken Desert 2 is an emotional landscape painting that explores the fragility of arid environments through texture and material. The composition suggests a distant desert scene: a cracked, fractured ground dominates the lower half of the canvas, while a subdued, textured sky extends above it. The desert surface is created using a self-made modeling paste that cracked naturally during the drying process, forming organic fissures reminiscent of dried… earth and erosion. These ruptures act as visual metaphors for environmental stress and transformation, reinforced by a restrained palette of blue, grey, and muted beige. The sky is shaped with gesso, resulting in soft, irregular textures that evoke atmospheric movement and shifting clouds. Rather than depicting a specific place, the painting conveys the emotional experience of a silent, vulnerable landscape. As part of the Broken Desert series, the work reflects on climate change and invites quiet contemplation about nature’s resilience.
Doreen Gehrke is a self-taught artist and geologist whose scientific background significantly influences her artistic work. Structures, strata, natural processes of formation, and the aesthetic language of the earth are reflected in many of her pieces. This combination of geological knowledge and intuitive painting technique forms the basis for her Emotional Landscapes – atmospheric, often abstract landscapes that depict inner states, moods, and memories rather than real places. The pricing of her artwork is primarily based on the technical and time-related effort of the painting process, while the size of the work plays a secondary role.
