About this artwork
Broken Desert 6 is the final work in the completed Broken Desert Series. Despite its intimate scale of just 15 × 15 cm, the painting carries a strong sense of spatial and emotional depth. It is the only work in the series in which a fractured desert landscape directly meets the sea.
The composition is divided into contrasting zones: a cracked, relief-like surface in warm earth tones suggests parched soil shaped by heat, erosion, and time, while… deep blues dominate the surrounding space, evoking water, depth, and stillness. Fine horizontal marks in the upper area recall waves, currents, or distant clouds, creating a quiet yet powerful dialogue between land and sea.
As in all works of the Broken Desert Series, the painting is created on a recycled canvas. Traces of earlier layers and underlying structures remain visible, adding a temporal dimension reminiscent of geological strata in which memory, change, and vulnerability are embedded.
Doreen Gehrke is a self-taught artist and geologist whose scientific background significantly influences her artistic work. Structures, strata, natural processes of formation, and the aesthetic language of the earth are reflected in many of her pieces. This combination of geological knowledge and intuitive painting technique forms the basis for her Emotional Landscapes – atmospheric, often abstract landscapes that depict inner states, moods, and memories rather than real places. The pricing of her artwork is primarily based on the technical and time-related effort of the painting process, while the size of the work plays a secondary role.
