This vessel belongs to my Strata series, where I work with the idea of time as excavation - uncovering what lies buried, both in the earth and within ourselves. When shaping it, I kept thinking of ancient burial mounds scattered across the steppe, where objects left for the dead survive as silent witnesses of forgotten rituals.
Hand-built from chamotte clay, the vessel carries a raw, uneven surface, almost reptilian in texture. Its dark glaze and… sculptural form give it the presence of an artifact, both fragile and powerful.
For me, Kurgan is a reminder that memory is never smooth or complete — it comes to us in fragments, like relics unearthed from the ground, carrying both history and mystery.
Elena Vostryakova, a Russian-born artist based in Vienna, works primarily with ceramics and sculpture, drawing from a rich background in visual arts fueled by hands-on exploration. She employs fluid, organic forms and a dynamic interplay of spontaneity and careful craftsmanship, blending the immediacy of the present with echoes of ancient history. Her art embodies transformation and movement, inviting viewers to reflect on memory, time, and the enduring pulse of human experience, all while evoking a sense of liberation and wonder.
