About this artwork
Elation explores a more vibrant and expressive use of colour within my practice. Layers of red, carmine and yellow are built up, interrupted and partially covered with white, creating a continuous tension between what is revealed and what disappears beneath the surface.
For me, the work carries a sense of joy, energy and release. The colours remain strongly present even where they are fragmented or partially concealed, breaking through the white… and extending towards the edges of the composition. Elation is about allowing that sense of vitality to remain visible, exuberant, layered and full of movement.

Els Devrieze is a Belgian painter whose work explores intensity, stillness, and the physical presence of paint.
Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, she builds layered surfaces that function as inner landscapes rather than literal depictions. Her practice is driven by intuition and material engagement, allowing tension and balance to emerge through texture, color, and restraint.
Devrieze’s work invites sustained looking, offering space for reflection without prescribing a fixed narrative.
