About this artwork
Anguish explores the physical presence of an emotion that is difficult to put into words. A sweeping movement of intense blue curves across the dark surface, shifting into deep, dark blue where the pigment becomes denser and seems to merge with the background.
For me, the work grew from a feeling of inner tension and emotional pain, without referring to one specific experience. The contrast between the vivid and darker blues became a way of giving… that feeling a physical presence. Some areas appear almost luminous, while others recede into darkness or break apart into traces.
The curved movement seems to gather and hold its energy rather than release it completely, leaving the emotion suspended within the work.

Els Devrieze is a Belgian painter whose work explores intensity, stillness, and the physical presence of paint.
Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, she builds layered surfaces that function as inner landscapes rather than literal depictions. Her practice is driven by intuition and material engagement, allowing tension and balance to emerge through texture, color, and restraint.
Devrieze’s work invites sustained looking, offering space for reflection without prescribing a fixed narrative.
