My photographs from Austria and Italy explore the aesthetics of power through images of birds of prey circling above mountainous landscapes.
The motifs establish a visual hierarchy in which the elevated gaze becomes a central device:
the birds’ position in the air suggests control, overview, and dominance, while the mountains beneath them appear as both target and obstacle.
Together, these elements form a metaphor for political… ambition and the exercise of power in turbulent times.
The photographs are read in dialogue with William Shakespeare’s Richard III, a drama that exposes how power can be gained and maintained through manipulation, rhetorical seduction, and violence.
Richard emerges as a political predator: strategic, ruthless, and willing to create chaos for his own benefit.
This logic is echoed in contemporary authoritarian currents, where fear, polarization, and simplified enemy images are used as instruments.
Erik Stenbeck, a Norwegian photographer with a strong academic background in art history and languages, creates evocative works in both black-and-white and color digital photography. He employs straight, unstaged techniques that capture the accidental beauty of fleeting moments, often exploring landscapes, architecture, and the recurring motif of birds. His artistry invites viewers into a world of quiet reflection and existential inquiry, conveying emotions of stillness, mystery, and the profound but subtle connections between humanity and nature.
