About this artwork
In Dark Father, I reinterpret one of pop culture’s most iconic figures—Darth Vader—through a lens of suburban irony and warmth. Instead of wielding a lightsaber in battle, I place him at a backyard barbecue, calmly grilling hamburgers while two Stormtroopers stand by like his “children.” I love transforming his intimidating presence into something unexpectedly human and almost affectionate.
Behind them, I use a vintage Weber logo, echoing 1950s American… ads, to create a nostalgic and humorous contrast. The Florida-style backyard, with its bright light and palm trees, adds to the sense of domestic calm.
I also enjoy hiding playful details: the grill subtly mimics the shape of Vader’s helmet, and the red spatula becomes a tongue-in-cheek nod to his lightsaber. The title Dark Father reflects the linguistic roots of “Darth Vader,” emphasizing the duality between menace and tenderness. Through this piece, I invite viewers to see power and myth through a more ironic, relatable lens.
Ettore Bechis, a Turin-born artist working in the United States, expresses his artistic language through painting, set design, and tattoos, combining pop culture experiences with a practical background. He uses a mix of techniques such as acrylics, textures, and layering, alternating figurative realism, graphic energy, and impactful theatrical compositions. His works explode with intense colors, contrasts, and iconic references to rock and pop culture. With a fusion of irony and emotional depth, he seeks to convey energy, identity, and contemporaneity, engaging the viewer in a dynamic and immediate visual narrative.
