About this artwork
In Swamp King, I set out to capture the quiet dominance of Florida’s most iconic predator — the alligator — but with a subtle pop-art twist. Painted in acrylic on an elongated 12 x 36 inch canvas, the piece blends realism with a touch of irony: a single shoelace hangs from the alligator’s open jaws, hinting at modern life intruding into the wild. I wanted the creature’s armored hide to shimmer with layered texture and shifting color, its gaze calm… yet unyielding, embodying the resilience of the Everglades. The wide panoramic format mirrors the stillness of Florida’s wetlands, while the playful surreal detail transforms a powerful symbol of the swamp into a contemporary icon that feels both dramatic and unexpectedly human.
Ettore Bechis, a Turin-born artist working in the United States, expresses his artistic language through painting, set design, and tattoos, combining pop culture experiences with a practical background. He uses a mix of techniques such as acrylics, textures, and layering, alternating figurative realism, graphic energy, and impactful theatrical compositions. His works explode with intense colors, contrasts, and iconic references to rock and pop culture. With a fusion of irony and emotional depth, he seeks to convey energy, identity, and contemporaneity, engaging the viewer in a dynamic and immediate visual narrative.
