About this artwork
In “Breaktime,” I wanted to capture a candid, almost surreal moment that reveals the human side hidden behind the magic of a theme park. The painting shows a man in a full Minnie Mouse costume, the head lifted just enough to expose his real face as he takes a cigarette break and checks his phone. The contrast between the cheerful fantasy of the costume and the tired, everyday posture of the worker is what first drew me in.
Inspired by a real scene… from a TikTok video, I transformed that fleeting moment into a vivid pop-art image. The bright reds and greens, along with drips and splashes of paint, echo Minnie’s playful style while emphasizing the emotional tension beneath the surface.
Through this piece, I invite the viewer to look beyond the costume and acknowledge the person underneath — the fatigue, the routine, the reality behind the fantasy. Breaktime reflects the bittersweet intersection between commercial entertainment and the private lives of those who bring it to life.
