Bas relief of wig mannequins I found in a salvage shop. The owner of the shop had bought out the entire contents from a defunct doll factory. He had every kind of doll, from newborns to these ‘adults’ all in hand painted ceramic. He let me arrange them and photograph them - in this case as if they are coming off an assembly line. The holes in their heads are to anchor wigs and their eyes are hollow, as they had yet to be fitted with glass eyes.… I found the idea of these youthful, almost child like, faces with big breasts and holes in the head to be a metaphor of what is manufactured about and for women of that era. And perhaps in this one too.
This is cast in hydrostone and to further the idea of manufacturing I painted it with iron oxide and applied an accelerator to rust the iron particles. The surface will continue to rust and change. This process can be stopped by applying an acrylic sealer.
