I sculpted Witness immediately after reading Night, by Elie Wiesel. I wanted to try to portray in a sculpture the destruction, or attempted destruction, of the human spirit and the slow death of the body. I wanted to show the loss of faith and the loss of faith in humanity. It is a portrait that I made purposefully difficult to look at as you leave his face and turn to look at the side and the view from behind. He is dwindling, emaciated, and… it is painful; it should be painful to look at. The base has two small holes and the shadow of a mezuzah to represent the loss of his home and the persecution of his faith. The base is symbolic of how he is forced to live - surrounded by barbed wire and decay. It is a portrait of someone who has seen too much and lost too much.
Eva-Maria Wohn is a sculptor working primarily in clay-to-bronze, bringing to her art a rich background informed by diverse life experiences. She employs both classical and innovative techniques, excelling in powerful bronze portraits and expressive bas-reliefs that reveal her love of storytelling and allegory. Her works dance with humor, duplicity, and raw emotion, inviting the viewer to reflect, smile, and be moved by the intricate interplay of vulnerability and resilience.
