About this artwork
A work of strong visual and conceptual impact, this foldable triptych recalls the shape of an altarpiece or tabernacle, but reinterpreted in a contemporary key. The architectural structure is clean and geometric, with the central cusp reinforcing the idea of spirituality or sacredness.
When the panel is closed, the work appears as a monolithic, austere object, with flat surfaces and sober brown and red tones.
Once opened, the interior explodes… into a complex and layered visual language.
This work dramatizes the theme of the individual's confinement within imposed structures, be they social, ideological, or spiritual. The anonymous, serial figures depict a society where identity is caged. The fact that the work opens and reveals itself only to those with access evokes a sense of private or sacred, almost liturgical, revelation.
Gastone Cecconello (Vercelli, 1942) is an Italian artist with over fifty years of activity. His research develops through painting, sculpture, and mixed media, constructing a coherent and recognizable language based on symbolism, matter, and the figure of the hominid as a metaphor for the human condition.
His work explores the relationship between the archaic and the contemporary, between memory, myth, and everyday reality, maintaining a constant tension between formal rigor and expressive force. In 2013, the monograph Alle origini del mito, edited by Lorella Giudici, was published, critically retracing the artist's entire career.
