Reinterpretation in bronze of an African fertility doll.
These symbolic figures represent fertility, protection, and maternal care in many African cultures. I’ve always been drawn to their form and meaning—this is my take, cast in bronze, handcrafted, and one of a kind (Edition 1 of 1). This ornamental piece nods to tradition but is reimagined in bronze through my own sculptural lens. Fertility dolls like the Ashanti Akua'ba and Namji of Cameroon… were believed to aid conception and teach maternal care. Their bold, stylised forms—whether adorned with beads or carried like real children—embody ancestral wisdom and artistic expression. Today, these figures are valued for both their cultural depth and unique design.
Heinrich Filter is a self-taught sculptor whose deep connection to the African wilderness—shaped by over a decade as a professional safari guide—lies at the heart of his work. Specialising in bronze, he creates powerful, handcrafted pieces that fuse lifelike realism with expressive abstraction and refined, timeless form. Inspired by Africa’s wildlife, people, and tribal heritage, Filter’s sculptures convey presence, dignity, and emotional depth. Every piece is personally crafted by the artist—from mould-making and wax work to casting, chasing, and patination—ensuring a singular vision from start to finish. His work balances classical technique with a contemporary sensibility, creating enduring pieces that celebrate the raw beauty and spirit of Africa.
