About this artwork
"Ice Crater" transports the viewer to a mysterious, almost extraterrestrial landscape. Deep blue and violet tones crisscross the surface like traces of frozen impacts that have carved craters into the image. The structures are reminiscent of geological formations—created not by time, but by cold and pigment, by chance and dedication.
The surface pulsates gently—sometimes velvety soft, sometimes almost electric. It's a silent drama of depth, texture,… and color. Like the echo of a cosmic moment, frozen on canvas.
A meditative work between earthiness and stardust – mystical, calm, full of inner expanse.
Herwig Port is one of the most versatile painters who makes full use of his craftsmanship. As a young child, he spent a lot of time in his grandfather's studio and was taught oil painting techniques. This enabled him to develop a broad spectrum of painterly expressiveness. Herwig Port creates luminous oil paintings characterized by harmonious coloration. His technique is based on thin, translucent layers of paint that allow the white of the canvas to shine through and their luminosity is reminiscent of church windows. His themes are the beauty of transience, expressed through autumnally colored vine leaves and the play of light in mountain and lake landscapes, which he often depicts in a highly abstract or almost photorealistic manner. In his work, it is important to him to always maintain a childlike curiosity in order to remain creative. This creativity lends his works their special expressiveness.
