About this artwork
This self-portrait addresses the inner conflict between personal identity and cultural pressure. My face, surrounded by numerous hands, is partially obscured—only one eye remains visible. The hands represent the curious glances, judgments, and unsolicited opinions that I often encounter—as a queer person, as someone of Iranian background.
The frame of the painting is a Persian carpet – a symbol of my cultural heritage: rich and beautiful, but also… restrictive. The inspiration came from a moment when people were talking about me instead of with me. It was an invasion of my privacy – invasive in the truest sense of the word.
This work is an expression of visibility and resistance. It depicts what it feels like to constantly disappear behind the expectations of others—to be seen but not truly recognized. Even far from my origins—in Germany—this feeling accompanies me.
Imanuel Scheiko, born in Shiraz and now living in Berlin, works as a painter with a deep background in photography and intercultural experience. His works combine ancient Persian patterns with the modern complexity of Berlin, revealing an exciting contrast between past and present, often with paradoxical as well as harmonious elements. Through his art, he conveys strong emotions of introspection, self-discovery, and acceptance, while sensitively and powerfully addressing social issues as well as queer and masculine identities.
