This work is a deeply personal self-portrait based on a childhood memory. At the age of four, I danced joyfully in my cousin's skirt at my own birthday party. It was one of the happiest moments of my life. But this memory later became a source of shame and ridicule, replayed repeatedly in a family video that became a painful tradition.
In the painting, my hands send out a silent cry for help—one clenched into a fist, the other forming the word… "Help me." The work is anchored by a genuine piece of an old Persian carpet—a symbol of my Iranian heritage and the same kind of carpet I used to dance on.
It is a reflection on identity, memory, queerness and the deep traces that early experiences can leave.
Imanuel Scheiko, born in Shiraz and now living in Berlin, works as a painter with a deep background in photography and intercultural experience. His works combine ancient Persian patterns with the modern complexity of Berlin, revealing an exciting contrast between past and present, often with paradoxical as well as harmonious elements. Through his art, he conveys strong emotions of introspection, self-discovery, and acceptance, while sensitively and powerfully addressing social issues as well as queer and masculine identities.
