About this artwork
"Rise Like a Phoenix" is a four-panel painting that tells a story of strength, transformation, and love overcoming hate. Each canvas stands alone, but together they create a larger picture. The depicted person appears in four poses: surrounded by flames, in ash, and finally, blooming. The background features a cement wall covered in graffiti—both anti-queer and supportive messages. Inspired by the phoenix myth, the work symbolizes how queer people… can transform hate into strength and love.
Imanuel Scheiko, born in Shiraz and now living in Berlin, works as a painter with a deep background in photography and intercultural experience. His works combine ancient Persian patterns with the modern complexity of Berlin, revealing an exciting contrast between past and present, often with paradoxical as well as harmonious elements. Through his art, he conveys strong emotions of introspection, self-discovery, and acceptance, while sensitively and powerfully addressing social issues as well as queer and masculine identities.
