About this artwork
"Neither. Nor." is a deeply personal self-portrait that addresses the rift between two cultures. Although I have lived in Germany for over 15 years, I am often still perceived as a "stranger" here. In Iran, however, I was never truly welcome as a queer person; my existence there was forbidden and life-threatening. The heavy concrete block on my shoulders represents the double burden of alienation. The labyrinthine lines on my body reflect the struggle…
to find my own path. The scar on my leg, shaped like the map of Iran, recalls the wounds of origin and exile. This image speaks of identity, loss, and the tireless attempt to find a place of belonging.
