About this artwork
The Freedom of Expression series explores the themes of freedom of expression, censorship, and human rights. It reflects the struggle of people who raise their voices despite oppression and addresses the courage to stand up for freedom and self-determination. The starting point was the death of Jina (Mahsa) Amini in Iran, the consequences of which triggered worldwide protests against oppression and discrimination. The series takes up this movement… and translates it into a visual language. The depicted mouths, sewn shut with needle and thread, symbolize the enforced silence of many people—and at the same time, the unbroken will to be heard.
Imanuel Scheiko, born in Shiraz and now living in Berlin, works as a painter with a deep background in photography and intercultural experience. His works combine ancient Persian patterns with the modern complexity of Berlin, revealing an exciting contrast between past and present, often with paradoxical as well as harmonious elements. Through his art, he conveys strong emotions of introspection, self-discovery, and acceptance, while sensitively and powerfully addressing social issues as well as queer and masculine identities.
