About this artwork
In nature, almost no color exists as a single pure hue. Take that insight further and it’s no surprise that colors direct from a tube of paint can feel lifeless and dull. That’s especially true with red. Red from the tube, no matter what shade, can look flat if it’s not mixed with other colors. Knowing that, I mixed cadmium red deep with varied shades of earth colors (ochre, umber) and its complement (green) for the underlayers of this piece.
As… a result, what looks like “red” is actually 10–20 subtly different reds interacting. Before adding the white shapes, I finally glazed it with a warm dark, rusty brown.
I was going for a feeling that is quietly powerful. As I worked, I kept telling myself I wanted more radiance. That desire is where the title came from. I hope you sense that same energy when you view this piece.
« Beautiful art comes from inspiration. Inspiration comes from being present, from feeling alive. That's what art is for. »
