About this artwork
I travel extensively and collect so called "primitive" artwork as I go. I have spent much time in Mexico and collect the carved animals (Alebriges) there from the masters in Oaxaca. 2 of these animals are the stag and lizard featured here and collected 30 years ago. I love there poses and expressions. For artistic purposes I have changed them up a bit and applied my own patterns and colors to their forms. The background is original and created by… myself. This dramatic presentation highlights the original intent of the carver, which according to folklore, is to release the spirit of the animal from the tree (wood). Hence the title, Tree Spirits"...
