About this artwork
In honor of one of the greatest Abstract Expressionists, Willem de Kooning.
I get extremely excited when I can make this type of portrait, and can only create them a couple times a year due to the extensive prep. As I work on other paintings throughout the year I will take small, thick, samples of mixed colors from each work and separate them into individual containers for some dry time (Normally it is 1 to 3 months dry time). Once surface of each… sample dry to the touch (the underlying paint will still be wet and tacky) I apply the paint to the surface using my hands instead of using a brush. The process brings me closer to my paints and allows for extreme personal expression within the work. Each detail in these works hearkens another painting, another time and creative process. They become the sum of all memories of a specific body of work and are thusly animated into the humanity of my paintings.
« Either way, my message for the viewer is simple. Enjoy my work for its visual elements. Experience the excitement of the micro, macro, and then the subliminal. Rinse and repeat. »
Jon Parlangeli is a passionate American painter and sculptor who has widely exhibited his work throughout the U.S. Fascinated by the process of creation, he composes works that experiment with color and the physicality of paint. Parlangeli's creations stand out for their depth and tactility, appearing as explosions of bright color and unexpected shapes. Parlangeli additionally includes a representational balance of nature and humanity in his work, that merges with abstract elements to create a kind of historic bibliophile hidden in the paint.
