About this artwork
With Hope, I explore the instability of identity and the tension between what we show and what remains underneath.
In the Social Myths series, I am interested in the characters we build, perform, and eventually become. I do not paint portraits in a realistic way. I construct emotional presences shaped by projection, social codes, and inner fragmentation.
I work through successive layers of acrylic, resin, and Posca linework. The accumulation of… marks creates a vibrating surface where faces seem to appear, dissolve, and overlap at the same time.
The multiple gazes inside the composition are intentional. They create a sense of tension and disorientation, as if several identities were trying to coexist within the same space.
With Hope, I wanted to capture that fragile moment where the mask no longer fully holds, but where vulnerability has not yet turned into collapse.
Julien Gilles is a visual artist and painter with roots in comic art, now embracing diverse mediums such as canvas, Plexiglas, and PVC with acrylics and markers. His energetic style blends controlled spontaneity, vibrant colors, and layered gestures, drawing influence from Max Ernst and Basquiat while mixing abstraction and figuration. His work pulses with life, light, and playfulness, seeking to surprise and engage viewers in a vivid, emotional experience that celebrates imperfection and the unexpected.
