About this artwork
Pretty, Not Tamed is part of the Humanizer series, in which Julien Gilles explores the tension between constructed identity and imposed identity.
Through this hybrid figure — somewhere between animal and human projection — the artist reinterprets the familiar image of the giraffe. Often associated with grace and elegance, it is here infused with a more unstable, almost untamed energy.
The line is deliberately free and nervous. It does not aim to… smooth the image, but to disrupt it. Lines accumulate and overflow, subtly breaking the expected contours. What was meant to be pleasing becomes more ambiguous, more alive.
The artwork plays with codes of softness and beauty, while refusing to be confined by them. It evokes the roles we take on — consciously or not — and the moment we begin to step away from them.
With Pretty, Not Tamed, Julien Gilles does not reject appearance.
He simply questions the place we give it.
