About this artwork
Election campaigns often feel strangely theatrical. Candidates visit markets, greet commuters, and stage volunteer activities, repeating the same gestures every election. Loud campaign trucks play awkwardly remixed songs while candidates perform exaggerated displays of friendliness.
The climax often comes near the end of the campaign, when candidates bow deeply in public, promising reflection and change. Watching these scenes raises a simple question:… how sweet must power be for someone to abandon even their pride to obtain it?
In this work, a figure stands naked after discarding the clothes that once symbolized authority. Facing the viewer, the figure appears to plead for something. The gesture reflects how those who normally wield power suddenly perform humility during election periods, lowering themselves to ask for votes.
The work satirizes this moment when authority turns into desperate appeal.
A painter by profession, Jungwan Chae boldly brings his military background to life. He employs anonymized, bald figures in suits to critique society, utilizing simple yet impactful beans to depict modern social realities. His art passionately expresses individual and collective dissatisfaction, stimulating dialogue about societal issues.
