About this artwork
Crawling between someone’s legs is an act of deep humiliation. When the powerful assert their dominance over the weak, they may force them to crawl between their legs or kneel, compelling them to recognize their subordinate position. Such acts reinforce social hierarchies and inflict humiliation upon the oppressed.
In modern society, we have begun to stratify ourselves through capital, yet we hardly question this system. The economic crimes committed… by corporate executives are often swept under the rug by their wealth and influence, while the public remains indifferent, merely admiring their financial power. In doing so, we willingly crawl between their legs. The artwork Between the Legs portrays how people in capitalist societies accept these hierarchical structures without resistance.
There is a common saying: "If you're rich, you're the boss." Upon closer reflection, it is a rather bitter joke. Why have we come to embrace the social classes created by capital so unquestioningly?
A painter by profession, Jungwan Chae boldly brings his military background to life. He employs anonymized, bald figures in suits to critique society, utilizing simple yet impactful beans to depict modern social realities. His art passionately expresses individual and collective dissatisfaction, stimulating dialogue about societal issues.
