About this artwork
This work portrays the polarized condition of our present society.
Even when we strive to maintain balance, we are ultimately forced to choose one side. In political, social, economic, and cultural debates, neutrality is often dismissed as cowardice or regarded merely as a temporary stage before committing to one of two extremes. The necessity of a perspective that stands in the middle—capable of observing both sides—is ignored, while the struggle… to pull the other into one’s own camp continues endlessly.
Yet the world is not built upon simple binaries. The space that exists between extremes is precisely where dialogue, negotiation, and reconciliation can occur. As forces of attraction and opposition intensify, those who attempt to maintain balance in between become ever more essential. In a society increasingly fractured by polarization, can we still preserve the value of the middle ground?
A painter by profession, Jungwan Chae boldly brings his military background to life. He employs anonymized, bald figures in suits to critique society, utilizing simple yet impactful beans to depict modern social realities. His art passionately expresses individual and collective dissatisfaction, stimulating dialogue about societal issues.
