About this artwork
The Splendor of Carelessness
I painted them in the urgency of feeling, for that is what Expressionism is: a raw truth projected onto the canvas. With acrylics, I sought not exact likeness, but the very radiance of their souls. This abstract background, saturated with pink, turquoise, and acid green, is not a backdrop; it is the fertile chaos of childhood, a chromatic explosion that vibrates around them.
I wanted the pigments to flow, for the… paint to splash and dance like a shower of gold and pink confetti, symbolizing this total carefree abandon, this moment when the whole world is reduced to a shared fit of laughter. Their dark skin absorbs and reflects the light with an almost painful intensity. Their faces, contorted by uncontrollable laughter, are for me the epitome of freedom. They are there, unfiltered, without judgment, free to laugh.
This painting is my tribute to the age when one is still perfectly, absolutely, poetically light.
I am a self-taught visual artist of Cameroonian nationality, I paint the human condition through childhood, resilience, resistance and identity are my favorite themes. My style mixes realism, comic book illustration, narrative figuration and borrowings from art history, creating a dreamlike and emotional universe. Trained at the Kanganyam Viking workshop in Douala, I have been exhibiting around the world since 2009, including a solo at the Sakhile Me gallery in Germany in 2021 with "Stolen Childhood". I represented Cameroon at the 7th Francophone Games in Nice in 2013 and won several awards, including the UNRISD prize in 2023. My works are featured in prestigious collections, such as the Gandur Foundation for Art and the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth. Since 2020, I have been represented by the Sakhile Me gallery based in Frankfurt, Germany.
