About this artwork
The colouring and the atmosphere in this painting are inspired by early Italian paintings - Uccello's The Hunt in the Forest' and Pisanello's 'The Vision of St. Eustace'. Both have been well-known to me since childhood and are constantly in the back of my mind when I sit down to paint.
I live surrounded by ancient forests, where nature still dominates and deer, wild boar and pheasants can still be seen. Once under the trees, it's easy to imagine… the hunts of the medieval French kings and the mystery and spirituality of the middle ages. The gilded leaves in the trees, created by scratching through the egg tempera paint to reveal the gold beneath, evoke this magical feeling.
This artwork was painted in the hand-finished frame, which is fixed and forms part of the artwork. The title, 'Pasianus Colchicus', gilded onto the frame, is the taxonomic name of the ring-necked pheasant.
Dimensions: 40cm x 35cm framed, 30cm x 25cm image. The painting is signed and dated on the reverse.

« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
