Presented on a steel plinth (32 x 12 cm), Quadratino closely resembles several of the artist's last paintings (BEYOND THE GRIDS - TRACES 20032 and BEYOND THE GRIDS 20061). Indeed, in the same spirit, this sculpture on the theme of the grid, rather than barring or prohibiting, structures the space and participates in it.
It's a gate about to fly away, free.
The writing is structured but not rigid, it combines flexibility of the line and lightness,… bringing rhythm and movement to this sculpture. Its verticality, like its inclination, gives it momentum and dynamism.
The texture of its surface expresses the marks of time and thus contributes to the timeless character of this piece, as coming from the depths of our history, our land and our cultures.
This unique piece is made of ash. It was sculpted then charred, inked and finally waxed.
« Trying to reach the essential, in all its simplicity, humility and authenticity.
Attempt to touch my own authenticity. »
Whether painting, sculpting or writing, Marc Laffolay strives for a direct, meditative and impulsive gesture.
He strives to banish any intervention of the mind, to privilege the spontaneous act, sincerity, without conscious reference to fashions and other trends.
For him, these are the conditions of authenticity.
